Mississippi River Refuge

The Mississippi River Wildlife Refuge was established in 1924 and consists of a 261 mile long stretch of the Mississippi River and encompasses 240,000 acres protected from development and commercialization.  Lansing sits on the edge of this refuge and offers an exceptional perspective, the pictures below are courtesy Dan Moy and represent the Lansing portion of The Refuge. For more information on this refuge, please see the US Fish and Wildlife Service

In Lansing, IA, we are considered 'Pool #9' of The River and we have our own dedicated group of volunteers who organize efforts to keep our portion pristine. Be sure to see their remarkable efforts detailed on this website, "Friends of Pool Nine".
